If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where
6 q4 v! l0 H5 K$ Fall things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is
) q9 u$ Z, h4 t3 ^+ I+ Jalive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight 3 E4 \8 @" G+ l
is your answer.

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in 0 ?/ D: y8 m8 _" F. I
numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and
, v8 G+ ^* l6 f  K) j8 q4 ~4 Qfour hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed
# ?3 y3 v) i+ \. o4 Qthat this time must be different, that their voices could be that " Z% \# }; O8 h8 Y: S5 l$ @1 L
difference.+ L6 I6 F: p7 H" P: ?
0 T* n" V! y" q4 t2 l% K( ]$ ~
It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and / w$ K: @8 Q; k$ a' @3 I
Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, ; k; B0 Q8 o! A8 J& `& a
disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that
& S, @( g: W8 G4 E" z! W& A0 Bwe have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red
3 p& J& ~+ J" _states and blue states.
9 I" p" K) n: \& ?! i$ c! U
0 Q2 q8 H2 f; m# S! T- e4 w* pWe are, and always will be, the United States of America.: u9 ?/ v- m5 B% d

It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to 0 g' X: \, B. [/ Z6 D7 P
be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their 9 s/ g$ D/ T! r7 m
hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a + L0 b# }% s1 o' J" {# D7 i

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this 3 a2 L% ]/ H5 J0 ]
date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.# `! Q- }- c' f

1 n" H$ m4 j" J$ M3 eA little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious
# r0 K9 R. N" Y. p! F- F- _3 hcall from Sen. McCain.
  S1 i9 `- A2 o9 e6 p( O( ^
3 U9 X+ t4 M; H* L. ]  B8 XSen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even
, e6 ]" |$ z4 x. Hlonger and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices ! W/ Y5 ~! t) _+ N) a
for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for 9 n5 p+ _9 A% W" F3 z, C
the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.( d# C  X  S4 S

5 \/ W: r. k$ F; q* ]7 Z$ V4 DI congratulate him; I congratulate Gov. Palin for all that they've + C2 e' T: V$ X8 K1 l0 J( ^
achieved. And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's " S9 h' t8 U; _# H3 U

heart, and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with
! N% r" f2 j2 j7 u+ i& D4 p: [( ?  lmuch money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls
1 B9 P. B% n' E; W1 X. F! D) S" E) Aof Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms : I; j& Y/ C, X" |& C  g: t
of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men . X0 p$ |6 S- ]' d5 A+ e& j) ?8 [* [
and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and 9 n" i4 N$ T1 w6 c7 M
$20 to the cause.! C" u: N" E0 ?2 ^
; N4 v# `( {0 A4 k! E4 z
It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their / J* y# ]# w' L& U: Q; G" U1 d
generation's apathy who left their homes and their families for jobs that & F4 v7 s' Z# k, z! p: E
offered little pay and less sleep.
1 _6 _) V: j2 B. \; }7 [
% y6 o" z% p4 Q/ _# PIt drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold
1 w: L( m9 u8 T" P* [6 `* Kand scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the
* j; e- w2 A) Z) z9 xmillions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more
  g4 p& U) e& n7 f+ D. Ythan two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for
' \! q; k% z/ Y/ pthe people has not perished from the Earth./ O: w& T. m$ k- f" q
0 G$ c: x0 r; a5 v6 l' o
This is your victory.
) q0 X1 w! y9 s0 z0 k* r* C
( I2 q7 S) |; q; V; y6 GAnd I know you didn't do this just to win an election. And I know you . C, ?3 v3 v8 U- B8 r! f" d
didn't do it for me.

You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead.
  `2 f5 g1 x0 ^7 N9 AFor even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will
1 U! k; Y4 ]9 j) ?8 t" r  Y, }! ?bring are the greatest of our lifetime -- two wars, a planet in peril, the
5 Q% n5 U0 p+ ]1 G7 \  u3 cworst financial crisis in a century.) f1 v8 f' `4 M

8 M- K8 \0 q. sEven as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up ! ^7 }7 v3 H- y+ y8 J
in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives
1 W* H; Y( P0 Z& ^7 g" ]for us.
" {6 @  q- B" g& K  M9 U0 i% j  V5 {  t. Z: j4 f
There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall
4 L6 ^, d* G; F, sasleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors' bills
! e/ m" K. u, l: P2 L2 [; u5 H! ror save enough for their child's college education.
6 N( N* t0 h4 t6 K4 I3 |
% Y! h2 u& i9 u) XThere's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to # [/ b: G* v7 V
build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair.
4 e5 F8 @2 j4 _& u& I6 n( g' N$ \1 i" u5 P
The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there
6 P# ?( n! b; w# r/ f: k. lin one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more
% k4 J$ W- A9 y, v$ d; b. q# Qhopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.8 r9 h* Z" t4 N
( F, A' Z8 e8 c! f: k4 j1 v( q. m
I promise you, we as a people will get there." _4 [0 k$ h2 I

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree
8 z/ x5 I, ], k6 {9 l! x1 b: N. Zwith every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the 8 M1 H/ c9 K7 h$ W8 D
government can't solve every problem.% _0 `- L0 }. `4 t- B
, Z& a/ F8 W1 D6 H6 a& H
But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will % Q4 i5 C2 b" j8 o8 K
listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you
( ]4 V* K3 h5 `1 Yto join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in 6 e9 C& e" @7 t1 D: p" \# U1 A. U
America for 221 years -- block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by , K" E: ]- n* Q# @( c8 d8 J% h6 {
calloused hand.
# \; z$ `6 o; L- `- \) Q, {7 m: W6 b; z
What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn 3 y: m( ]& p: B+ J, O$ Y8 o

& y8 z' M7 N. h" UThis victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us 9 j5 p& F, |) ]/ C! c/ j
to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things 3 R2 S+ u$ o" t% a5 t2 L& ~
were.  @( a/ l2 H# I* Q8 Q* U
  B2 R( H5 L+ m& d
It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit
  v. n$ ~+ B  s* i& f: q+ Yof sacrifice.
. J) C2 w4 A' b; U, D  c2 d$ e1 Q' {  |+ k
So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each ' x5 R- r( D- ^  V
of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only " j+ O$ X( S: S, i; D
ourselves but each other.* e; B  h1 Q/ k; U- ^4 s

/ ~, f/ J4 b; }/ d* r8 F: @Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's
: j% n/ M- L8 |4 H; z! C1 t9 D, fthat we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.3 I8 p# W: Z) k$ O& x
$ b6 G1 ?7 s9 t* m; s
In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist - H, L3 P, ]) n& E+ ~  h2 A
the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and , j# P2 o0 K  c, W( h9 o* d
immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.
! W% w/ _2 ]6 f! H+ {
0 ?5 x3 N7 f1 G1 X  ]8 Z, NLet's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the
' J7 `7 p  U' C$ J2 A  wbanner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the
1 h, p% z; [: i3 ^2 rvalues of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.
0 M& p, q4 D; b/ d% z" Y' E5 C1 o6 R9 S! [  n% ~
Those are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won 5 n: U0 v( K! z5 R
a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and
! v7 p& k- M0 N. r; j' ?7 pdetermination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.
! \& y' Z% w9 O4 }# q* b# f+ Q& `) D; R0 q! P  H
As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies # N7 C( D( H* m
but friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds / m& i* m1 W8 e- M% h
of affection.
4 z2 K2 z$ D' K6 {, t' [! ^
5 G3 V, {( ]. a% Q  ?; ^And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won 0 x% f5 _4 B; Z! U- C
your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be . L+ j! M* Q) T# }- a; o; z7 I9 k4 \
your president, too.
5 l* x0 r, x" F1 j5 W* }' d# Q8 O
And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments   V: p6 Q0 q4 i: A' z4 f5 z
and palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten 7 Z7 e' H: V. C' k6 f# c! i0 T  n
corners of the world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared,

, s5 i. w9 ]% ~% k  @5 a5 s. X4 @To those -- to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To

have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright: Tonight we proved
* M( G# A" t% p7 jonce more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of " n* N5 M# W, t. q& w3 x
our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our
( R: q8 a' }; eideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.: w; G9 n4 m% u& t& @0 J% J

That's the true genius of America: that America can change. Our union can
- C. }! c4 R+ a, F( B% `: X2 Ibe perfected. What we've already achieved gives us hope for what we can and 9 t/ I* m* r/ q7 e" j& |
must achieve tomorrow.5 @$ k0 u& M: ^; R1 M, D- L3 o

: x0 L3 k: F. t- _This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for % c5 w, a9 J$ {. A
generations. But one that's on my mind tonight's about a woman who cast her
6 L7 i& w+ [% [+ m0 d( Rballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in
4 R; p- h# ~1 Z+ k" wline to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann 0 |+ W! }, K7 T! S* b* e/ |
Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.
/ b0 o+ T3 P+ h3 t' |( N/ U' J( F/ @+ ]
She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars : _5 r5 @& C$ |4 f& _5 c
on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for / V0 h  c% f$ p+ V' K  ~
two reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.% K, k% b' r% B" _# ~7 Z
* \3 O& o( S! z( _/ m( Y
And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in
5 f# P$ A* h, _5 n* E6 M: o8 p9 @America -- the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the
5 K7 [$ K  k; T$ Z" J8 H  f; Wtimes we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that
: n) }# {* E/ a9 k8 q& MAmerican creed: Yes we can.
; e) s5 f% p0 t! U. q
  H' _( O3 D. I: @+ W% hAt a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she   _  N$ c& p/ Y8 |  [% g
lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we ' a# \; R) w: K
can.
# B3 o+ k4 r! N' o
- C4 x$ S$ R" nWhen there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she 9 ?' k/ c  N6 _, x- s
saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of & I/ ~' p- b- M7 m3 M
common purpose. Yes we can.* L5 {" J+ k; N( @+ ^  M) W8 r
& i# D7 \8 s4 j
When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was
, g$ q& z& k  w  hthere to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved.
& \6 V, {2 e' F/ G: H! dYes we can.
" x7 [' B9 E. U/ {& d
& z6 v, u. ?" |" u* V/ h1 t1 \She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a - }0 h+ A8 H- r. R
bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We
. U. L/ V6 F7 `; lShall Overcome." Yes we can.
# \6 }6 X% Q1 P: @+ {
2 l: |( @6 a" M; d( ?! }A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was
- D( j) v2 {5 X" aconnected by our own science and imagination.: f# e8 Q6 q5 t- _# N
) V% [: d  W* H) H( r3 |% S  O
And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and : L4 X7 V  o& N8 T
cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of ) j6 G. [1 F" Q: x% f
times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.
  F' q3 j( P9 q; S. `( _9 m2 w
0 k1 N$ A+ G& Q( q4 TYes we can.3 i. `4 H' S' o1 w) [

5 F) P" W8 O' J1 ^America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much
$ K" Q6 f4 u( u* Gmore to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves -- if our children should live
: ?: V! g! a1 b# p. w$ Tto see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long 9 v) G: Q4 J8 `) o# k& ?# o5 l
as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have
; D* H; H/ n& V; ~made?/ ?8 Y3 J5 \2 U" h( R- z- W# z& W
8 l9 V( {! `0 i8 s) \
This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment./ f# `: [+ z$ C9 H2 x% V7 C

This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of
0 `+ F; R3 p9 E1 [+ M  w- popportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of

that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we
  F) ]% d( I7 ~' \/ `& `are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we
